Primary objective
To provide effective management, leadership and development of the Darwin office in the Crown team. To provide direction and high-
level advice to staff on legal matters. To engage with stakeholders on behalf of the Director to facilitate the smooth day-today operation
of the Darwin Crown office, and to attend meetings on the Director’s behalf. To provide advice to the Director and his Deputy, on both
complex files as well as the proper administration of the Darwin Crown office. To allocate Crown work across the Darwin office, including
arranging the briefing of Supreme Court trials.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high-level management and leadership of the Darwin Crown team.
2. Work closely with the Director and Deputy Director to ensure the smooth running of the Darwin Crown office.
3. Allocate work to all staff in the Darwin Crown office.
4. Provide direction to legal staff on complex criminal matters.
5. Engage with stakeholders and attend meetings on the Director’s behalf.
6. Act as a mentor including providing training and guidance to less experienced prosecutors.
7. Conduct complex trials and hearings in the Supreme Court.
8. Conduct committal proceedings and contested summary prosecutions, preliminary examinations and related proceedings before the

Local Court.
9. To conduct recruitment actions for Darwin Crown office as required.
10. To evaluate and respond to requests for information.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
2. Proven high-level ability to manage a legal office in accordance with internal practices and procedures, working with competing

demands under pressure.
3. High-level knowledge of and experience in criminal law, Uniform Evidence Law, criminal practice and procedure.
4. High level of knowledge of the DPP Prosecution Guidelines and policies, and an ability to prosecute in accordance with the same.
5. Proven experience and ability in the conduct of complex criminal trials before a jury.
6. High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and

collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general public.
7. Ability to provide high-level expert advice and legal opinion relating to the prosecution of complex criminal cases to the DPP and other

prosecutors and to both internal and external stakeholders.
8. Well-developed political and cross cultural awareness skills together with a sound understanding of Indigenous issues relevant to

prosecution services.
9. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).

Desirable
1. Relevant post graduate qualifications.
