Why Marthakal Homelands Health Service?
MHHS, situated on Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island), is a mobile Yolngu Medical Service covering 15,000 square kilometres in remote East Arnhem Land with a population around 300. There are 29 homelands in the Marthakal Homelands region, for which the medical service is on 24 hours emergency call. Being a mobile medical service means that the health team travels in small planes and manual four-wheel drive vehicles to conduct clinics out on the homelands. What medical equipment cannot be packed can’t be taken, so compact sturdy anti shock equipment is used.

What’s in it for you?
  • Excellent RN salary of $120,000 – $130,000 per annum plus superannuation
  • Ability to Salary Package up to $15,900pa plus a further $2,650pa on Meals and Entertainment
  • 7 weeks’ annual leave
  • Up to $8,000 Relocation and Repatriation support (eligibility as per the MHHS policies)
  • An isolation allowance of $1600 (before tax) payable on completion of 4 months’ work (maximum of 3 isolation allowances per year).
  • Live and work in a community steeped in traditions and culture
  • Short term contracts considered
  • Housing and utility package
What’s the role?
The Registered Nurse identifies the needs and provide evidence-based nursing care to people of all ages and cultural groups, including individuals, families, and communities in homelands in an effective and timely manner with an expected health outcome
  • The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team comprising On-site and Remote GPs, AHP, AHW trainees, Health Services Manager, and other non-clinical staff, so as to achieve goals and health outcomes for Homelands Clients.
  • As a Remote Area Nurse (RAN) in MHHS, you will provide high quality, evidenced-based care; education for assigned health programs portfolio (Chronic Disease, Child Health, Women’s Health, Mental Health); and participate in routine service delivery of vaccinations to the homeland’s community.
  • You will mentor Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHW) trainees, support AHPs and AHW trainees as the primary health carers within the community, and work to build stronger communities.
  • Using skills and knowledge to deliver quality health care and meet all legal obligations
  • Supporting and participating in all initiatives and change processes that aim to improve service delivery
  • Travel by manual 4WD/light aircraft required.
Is the role right for you?
  • A relevant tertiary qualification degree and current registration with AHPRA.
  • Current REC, MEC, BLS, ALS, Immunization, Pharmacotherapeutics certifications or willingness to obtain the certifications within 6 months of employment.
  • Ideally experience working and living in a remote Indigenous community, which is an alcohol-free environment
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people for whom English is not their first language
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a small, remote Aboriginal Controlled Health Service delivering primary and dental health care
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of social determinants of health issues affecting Aboriginal people
  • Current manual driver’s licence, current Working with Children clearance (OCHRE Card) and current criminal history check.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, demonstrating efficient time management skills.

What’s it like living in Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island)?
The advantages of living and working in remote East Arnhem Land are varied and interesting and provide a pathway to develop skills in chronic disease, tropical medicine, Aboriginal health, and rural health, which could not be experienced in other regions of Australia. You are able to enhance your emergency medicine skills, whilst contributing to improved health outcomes for the Marthakal Homelands region. The challenges are as diverse as the landscape, but the opportunities to achieve your professional and lifestyle goals are immense.
